Teaching Deuteronomy Today
Teach Christ from Deuteronomy in a way that engages the heart and transforms lives.
The Book of Deuteronomy is the “Alpha Course” of the Old Testament—but that is not how so many readers see and perceive the book today. Presented as Moses’ last will and testament, and locker-room pep talk to the generation about to fight for YHWH and take the promised land, it should presumably fire the heart and stir the emotions. But, we as Christians often approach Deuteronomy as though it is a knotty theological problem to untangle, which is absolutely no way to present the crucified and risen Christ to people who so desperately need him.
My goal in these sessions is to leave you excited about Christ from the book of Deuteronomy, and be able to excite others about Christ by using the book too. That will require some technical understanding. So, we will discuss the structure of Deuteronomy, the internal structure of the law, and the role of the law in the life of citizens of Ancient Israel. We will also learn together about how Deuteronomy was experienced by Jews and Christians in the first century, by imagining our way into Paul’s shoes as a Christian reader of Deuteronomy in the first century.
We will use those tools to explore how to see Christ in Deuteronomy. Not simply from a theological perspective, but to hear and feel how Deuteronomy challenges and encourages the ancient Israelites, and so hear and feel those same challenges and encouragements in our hearts as followers of him today.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- describe how the law functions internally
- describe how the law functions in the life of Ancient Israel
- navigate the structure of Deuteronomy
- draw relevant Christian heart-focused applications from the whole of Deuteronomy
